This morning I went running with a couple classmates from our hotel in Sarajevo, down the hill, through the old city, along the river, and past where Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and Duchess Sophie of Hohenberg on June 28, 1914. Of course, this assassination started WWI. The picture below shows where the assassination happened:
After a failed bomb assassination attempt earlier in the day just a little further down the road, Ferdinand visited the Sarajevo Town Hall and then went to see those wounded in the bombing. The driver accidently turned onto Franz Joseph Street just opposite Latin Bridge (bridge and street are pictured above). Princip, who was part of the failed assassination, had just finished a sandwich at cafe Schiller's (the cafe is now a museum, and pictured above) when he walked outside and saw Ferdinand's car backing out of the street. Princip then shot Ferdinand and Sophie (spot is shown above and next to the museum).
